Daniel

We have just completed our studies in Daniel, and what an exciting book this has been for us. We have seen how it is relevant for us as 21st century Christians and how Daniel stood for God in an alien culture in a foreign land.

There are many verses in Daniel that I could highlight as having spoken to me, but the most recent is from Daniel 12 and verse 3, which when talking about those who will rise to everlasting life says:

“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” (NIV)

We know that those who are saved through Jesus Christ have a glorious reward for all eternity. This would have been an immeasurable comfort to those who were facing persecution as they read these verses. However, is this verse saying to us that even though all are saved who believe in Jesus, our heavenly state is determined by that which we do whilst we are on earth? Surely this must be referring to our work in this world, as it will be too late to lead people to righteousness in heaven. So is it that some will shine brighter than others in heaven according to their works on earth, a greater glory and reward for those faithful, fruitful ministers for Christ?

If this was the case it would certainly not be out of step with New Testament teaching such as:

Romans 14:12

So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.  (NIV)

and;

1 Corinthians 3:12-15

If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.  (NIV)

I find that this is a challenge to me, what am I doing that will stand the Day of Judgment? What are my priorities in life? Is my life showing the wisdom of God in my actions and choices?  Am I being used by God to lead others into righteousness?

I do know that all who are saved in Jesus are sealed by the Holy Spirit and will be raised to everlasting life. I do believe that there will be others in heaven who will shine brightly as they share in the glory of those they have led into righteousness. I also know that all of us will fade into a modest glow when compared to the glorious presence of the Light of lights, Jesus.

Everything we do is because of Him who enables us. We have nothing to boast in only Jesus, and we will join with the elders in heaven and cats our crowns before Him and declare that only He is worthy of glory, honour and power.

So while we are still journeying to heaven, we have a work to do on earth. Let us strive to engage with activities that have worth for all eternity and join with Paul as he says in Romans 15:17-18:

“I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me …”(NIV)
